Concept art best practices for the video game industry and classic illustration techniques
Abstract
Creating concept art for video games is about refining ideas into a coherent vision. Concept artists use their knowledge of art principles and their technical understanding of their artistic media to create efficient and effective concepts for an industry that often works on a tight schedule. Every artist is different, and so is any given concept that an artist strives to make. The techniques that are part of an efficient workflow for one artist, may not work for another. There is much to learn from professional artists, who are willing to share their processes. Researching these techniques and applying them through practice and experimentation, I created two concept pieces each of a weapon, a character, and an environment to determine which techniques fit my workflow, finishing with a final, complete concept including all three subjects.
